This session is designed to give you a foundational understanding of artificial intelligence from a board and governance perspective. Whether AI feels like a foreign concept or a familiar conversation, this is your opportunity to step confidently into your role as a strategic steward of emerging technology. In just 60 minutes, we’ll explore how AI intersects with governance and ethics.
What you’ll discover
- AI Literacy for Directors: Unpack the core concepts of GenAI, risks and opportunities, and the board’s role in oversight and deployment.
- Practical AI Integration: Explore how AI can be thoughtfully introduced into our organisational life to support mission delivery, not distract from it.
- AI in the Boardroom: Learn how to use AI tools to support discernment, strategy discussions, and future-focused decision-making.

The registration of interest form has been sent out for the Masterclass on Harnessing AI, with a further four sessions that will cover:
- Risk & ethics in AI for values-led organisations
- Governance frameworks and board responsibilities
- Practical tools and strategic applications
- Future trends shaping ministry and mission
The cost will depend on how many people take up the offer and we can’t run it without a minimum number. Whānau Mercy Ministries will contribute 50% of the cost. The masterclass in total (combined with watching the attached introductory video) will be 5 cpd.
Helen van Orton is a professional Director and Entrepreneur. Currently the Chair of Answer Services Ltd, she is also a board director of the Co-operative Bank Ltd, Co-operative Life Ltd and Centrix Group Ltd and a former Chair of the HR Institute of NZ and Director of The Warehouse Financial Services Ltd, Ruralco Ltd and Zeal. Her engagement with cutting-edge technologies spans back to 2017, beginning with pivotal initiatives at Vodafone involving digital humans, Robotic Process Automation (RPA), and chatbots. Her ongoing use of AI across all facets of her businesses and in her roles as a board Director underscores her expertise in integrating these tools to enhance operational efficiency and decision-making processes.
There will be no cost for directors for this initial session. This session will be recorded.
