Prayer
Both Te Ao Māori and Catholic have rich traditions of prayers being said privately, in worship services and at gatherings. Acknowledging our ancestors who have gone before us, and our present day whānau and community are all essential parts of a faith tradition. This karakia | prayer resource will hopefully inspire you to personalise and adapt these examples to meet your need and circumstance.

A prayer for our earth
All powerful God, you are present in the whole universe and in the smallest of your creatures.
You embrace with your tenderness all that exists.
Pour out upon us the power of your love,
that we may protect life and beauty.
Fill us with peace, that we may live
as brothers and sisters harming no one.
O God of the poor,
help us to rescue the abandoned and forgotten of this earth,
so precious in your eyes.
Bring healing to our lives,
that we may protect the world and not prey on it,
that we may sow beauty, not pollution and destruction.
Touch the hearts
of those who look only for gain
at the expense of the poor and the earth.
Teach us to discover the worth of each thing,
to be filled with awe and contemplation,
to recognise that we are profoundly united
with every creature
as we journey towards your infinite light.
We thank you for being with us each day.
Encourage us, we pray, in our struggle
for justice, love and peace.
Amen

Karakia mō Matariki
E te Atua,
God of all creation,
As the stars of Matariki rise and signal te tau hou Māori,
We pause in gratitude for the gift of new beginnings.
We remember those who have gone before us,
Our loved ones, our ancestors, our tīpuna,
May their memories guide us,
Their wisdom inspire us,
And their love surround us as we journey forward.
As Matariki shines above,
We give thanks for the abundance of the whenua,
For the kai gathered and shared,
For the hands that work the land,
And for the breath of life in all that grows.
Bless our whānau and our communities,
Unite us in aroha and whanaungatanga,
Help us to care for Papatūānuku, our Mother Earth,
With the spirit of kaitiakitanga entrusted to us.
May this Matariki be a time of reflection,
Of healing, of hope, and of renewal.
Guide our dreams and aspirations,
That we may walk gently,
With gratitude and respect,
Into the promise of the year ahead.

He Inoi mō Matariki
E te Atua o te ao katoa, God of all creation,
As Matariki rises in our skies, we pause to remember, to give thanks, and to look forward.
We remember those who have gone before us, our tūpuna, our loved ones,
And those who have shaped our journeys in mercy and aroha.
May their memory be a blessing.
Whakamoe atu mātou ki a rātou kua wheturangitia.
We give thanks for the fruits of the earth and sea, for kai shared and whenua nourished.
For community, for whānau, for the breath of a new season.
Ko koe te kaihomai o ngā mea katoa – thank you, Creator, for all your gifts.
We look forward with hope, guided by the stars and grounded in Papatūānuku.
Help us to sow peace where there is conflict, aroha where there is fear,
And justice where there is need.
As Matariki calls us to renewal, may we walk gently on this earth,
with eyes lifted to the heavens and hearts open to each other.
E te Atua o ngā whetū,
Bless this season of Matariki.
Āmene.
Opening Prayers
E te Atua aroha o nga mea katoa
E te Atua aroha o nga mea katoa
God, great lover of all that lives;
Your mercy extends to Earth’s end.
And nothing lies beyond the sweep of your gaze
From the confines of our comfort zones,
Save us from thinking the blessings we have by birth and chance, are ours by right.
Expand our horizons with the impulse of your love.
As we commit ourselves to act locally, show us the global impact of what we do.
Inspire us to stretch our tent pegs to make space for those at the margins.
Remind us that Mercy’s special gift is the energy to embrace and befriend and to welcome those who are excluded.
Open our hearts to those who wait to come in.
Mauri ora. Amen.
Ignite the flames of Mercy
E te Atua Atawhai huhua, God of unbounding mercy,
You who ignite the flames of love and justice,
kindle in us a new spark of mercy.
May the spirit of Catherine McAuley guide our hearts,
that we may serve with aroha,
walk with justice,
and embrace all with compassion.
Bless our hands for the work ahead,
our voices for truth,
and our hearts for the mission of Mercy,
today and always.
Āmene.
Te Wairua o te Atawhai | The Spirit of Mercy
E te Atua o te aroha,
Ko koe te puna o te atawhai,

Kia whirinaki mātou ki a koe i tēnei mahi rangatira.
God of love,
You are the source of mercy,
The light that guides us.
Open our hearts to hear your Holy Spirit,
That we may trust in you in this important work.
Bless our gathering today.
May our decisions be filled with wisdom and compassion,
So that we serve with justice and aroha,
Honouring the legacy of the Sisters of Mercy,
And walking together in te Wairua o te Atawhai.

Listening for tomorrow’s mission
E te Atua, kaihomai i te ora
In every age you have inspired some to be leaders, innovators, groundbreakers.
As we begin our hui today, we remember Catherine McAuley,
And the courageous bold women who first brought her vision and legacy to Aotearoa.
As we recall our Mercy tūpuna, who came here with large hearts and few resources,
Always ready to divide in order to share, we ask that you empower us in our turn,
Not to do what they did then, but to act as they would if they were here now.
May that same spirit of Mercy be at work as we meet here today,
Enabling us to read the signs of our times and listen deeply,
So that your wisdom can take root in our imagination and our hearts,
As we walk forward into tomorrow’s mission, led by your light.

Mercy as a bridge
E te Atua o te aroha,
We gather in this space today, grateful for the whenua beneath our feet,
Rich with the stories of tangata whenua, and of all who now call Aotearoa home.
In your mercy, meet us here.
As we open this meeting, we seek not just clarity of mind, but also softness of heart.
We call upon Mercy to be a bridge, a bridge between generations, between cultures, between communities.
Help us to stand in the in-between places with grace, listening more than we speak,
May we be people who lift the mana of others, not lower them in judgment or assumptions.
May our decisions be rooted in justice, our words carried with humility,
and our plans sown with seeds of peace for tomorrow.
In this land of maunga and awa, help us be like the waters, always moving forward,
Reflecting the sky above and the land beneath our feet.
Bless this hui, unite us in Spirit and lead us forward in Mercy.

Living Mercy for our common home
E te Atua o te aroha, God of mercy and creation
We pause in this moment to acknowledge you, present in the breath of wind,
in the flowing waters, in the richness of the earth, and in the beating heart of all creation.
Teach us, to walk gently upon this land.
May we be stewards, not merely owners; nurturers, not takers, and
bridge builders between the world as it is, and the world as it could be.
In this meeting, may our words be wise, our hearts open, and our decisions shaped by compassion
for the whenua, the moana, and all who dwell within and upon them.
Call us back to mercy, mercy for the land, mercy for the waters, mercy for one another,
And especially mercy for the generations yet to come.
May your Spirit guide us as we work together for the healing of our common home.

In this moment of planning
E te Atua Atawhai,
As we gather at this table, we pause to acknowledge your presence among us
In every voice, every vision, every hope we hold for the future.
We give thanks for the trust that has been placed in us,
And for the call to serve with both courage and humility.
In this moment of planning, may we not only look ahead with purpose, but also inward with hope.
Guide us to pursue not only what can be measured, but what truly matters.
May our decisions reflect justice, our dialogue reflect mana,
and our vision be wide enough to include the voices of the vulnerable and those most impacted.
In all we shape today, may we remain faithful to our mission,
Responsive to the needs of our time, and grounded in the values that sustain us.
Āmene.

God of many names
E te Atua Atawhai, God of Mercy
God of many names
God of each human heart
We are people of many backgrounds, talents and place,
And we are united in Mercy by a spirit and a tradition that originated in Dublin and which has spread to the outer reaches of the earth
And the inner recesses of our hearts.
As Whānau Mercy, in spirit and story,
We commit ourselves to preserving the best of the past,
And fostering hope for the future.
We thank you for the gift of this time together, the insights and abundant wisdom shared.

Prayers for Discernment
E te Atua atawhai – God of Mercy
You have a plan for each one of us
You hold out to us a future full of hope.
Give us the wisdom of your Spirit.
So that we can see the shape of Your plan.
As we discern what live giving, empowering and sustainable in our community.
Give us the freedom of Your Spirit
so that we radiate for others your compassion and mercy as we serve those who need us most in our community.
Mercy in our shoes
E te Atua
God companion on our journey
Let our holding on to traditions we cherish
Not prevent your plans from unfolding
To meet the needs of today.
Let our memory of what has been
Open us to future possibilities
And fire the imagination of those who join us
In seeking to transform our world.
May our founding stories be reawakened
And lived anew in the reality of our times.
May Catherine’s original vision
And the spirit of our Mercy heritage
Inspire us today
Not to do what they did then
But to be where they would be if they were here now
Standing in our shoes.

He inoi mō tēnei wā o mōhio | A Prayer for this time of discernment
E te Atua aroha me te mōhio,
As we enter this sacred space of discernment,
We pause to be still, to breathe deeply,
and rest in your presence.
You have called us here to listen deeply, to learn, and to lead.
Help us to see beyond the tasks and decisions,
To the people and purpose behind them.
Open our hearts to mercy, to wisdom, to grace.
Wairua Tapu, shine a light on what we read and hear.
Bring clarity where there’s confusion, and peace where there’s struggle.
May we all be fully present
To the moment,
To the mission,
And to you.
Kia tau ngā manaakitanga o te Atua ki runga i a tātou katoa

Centring and Clarity
E te Atua
Loving and Wise God,
As I enter this space of service and discernment,
I pause to become still to breathe deeply,
to ground myself in Your presence.
You have called me to this table, to listen, to learn, and to lead.
Amidst the pages, reports, and voices,
Please help me not to lose sight of the people and purpose behind them.
Grant me a heart that is open to truth, even when it challenges,
To wisdom, even when it surprises, to grace, especially when it is needed most.
Holy Spirit,
Shine your light upon what I read, what I hear, and what I feel.
Let your clarity rise above confusion,
Your peace settle every anxious thought,
And your guidance shape every decision.
May I be fully present
To the moment,, to the mission, and to you.

“Let us pray well and never get weary of doing what is good”
Catherine McAuley
Whakatauki
Proverbs
Catherine McAuley had a practice of writing letters to the sisters. She was gifted in the way she used words to encourage and to gently challenge. We can glean many inspirational quotations from her writings to inspire and guide our lives and work.
The poor need help today, not next week
The simplest and most practical lesson I know … is to resolve to be good today – but better tomorrow.
It comforts me exceedingly to hear you are happy.
This is your life, joys and sorrows mingled, one succeeding the other.
God never refuses His grace to those who ask it. If we are humble and sincere, God will finish in us the work He has begun. He never refuses His grace to those who ask it.
There is nothing of greater importance than the perfect discharge of our ordinary duties.
Prayer will do more [to solve our difficulties]… than all the money in the Bank of Ireland. Let us pray well and never grow weary.
You should remember that not to advance is to go back, and reflect each day that you can do more to attract God’s love and friendship than you did the day before.
If you really love God, you will thus prove it, for the proof of love is deeds
We ought then have great confidence in God in the discharge of all these offices of mercy, spiritual and corporal-which constitute the business of our lives.
